Synonyms: Modesty, shame - αἰδώς G127, αἰσχύνη G152αἰδώς G127 is prominently objective in its reference, having regard to others; while αἰσχύνη G152 is subjective, making reference to oneself and one's actions. Cf. Schmidt, chapter 140. It is often said that αἰδώς G127 precedes and prevents the shameful act, αἰσχύνη G152 reflects upon its consequences in the shame it brings with it' (Cope, Aristotle, rhet. 5, 6, 1). αἰδώς G127 is the nobler word, αἰσχύνη G152 the stronger; while "G127 would always restrain a good man from an unworthy act, αἰσχύνη G152 would sometimes restrain a bad one.
