MLV/Definition: Timothy*
(Tim-o-thy (honoring God). Paul’s friend, traveling companion and co-worker. Act 16:1-3 tells us that he lived in Lycaonia, probably in Lystra, and was born of a pagan father and a Jewish-Christian mother, named Eunice (2Ti_1:5). Paul had him circumcised before taking him on the great journey (2Co_1:19 ; Act_17:14 f; Act_18:5), and used him permanently as an assistant (Rom_16:21). He is named as the ‘co-writer’ of six letters (2Co_1:1, Php_1:1, Col_1:1, 1Th_1:1, 2Th_1:1, Phm_1:1). He was active in Thessalonica (1Th_3:2; 1Th_3:6), Corinth (1Co_4:17; 1Co_16:10), and then again in Macedonia (Act_19:22) as a messenger of the great apostle. He also accompanied him on his last journey to Jerusalem (Act_20:4). Later he shared Paul’s imprisonment (Php_2:19 and also the introductions of the imprisonment epistles except Eph). In 1Ti and 2Ti he is mentioned in the salutations (1Ti_1:2, 2Ti_1:2) and also 1Ti_1:18; 1Ti_6:20. Finally he appears once more in the NT, Heb_13:23. He is mentioned nowhere else in our history.)
