(G5913) Synonyms for Mercy, compassion: eleos (ἔλεος G1656), oiktirmos (οἰκτιρμός G3628).

Both words denote sympathy, fellow- feeling with misery, mercy, compassion. eleos, however, manifests itself chiefly in acts rather than words, while oiktirmos is used rather of the inward feeling of compassion which abides in the heart. A criminal might ask for eleos, mercy, from his judge; but hopeless suffering may be the object of oiktirmos, compassion.
